AUTHOR INTERVIEW & GIVEAWAY - Katie Reus

Primal Possession (Moon Shifter, #2)
We here at Paranormal Addicts are very excited to have Katie Reus on the blog.

She has a new book releasing September 4th.

Relax and enjoy her interview.

Katie is also kind enough to include a print copy of Primal Possession for our US followers.

Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I’m a writer who lives in the South. I love red wine, visiting old cemeteries and the beach. I’m obsessed with wearing flip-flops and reading books on my kindle. I write romantic suspense and paranormal romance for Carina Press, Harlequin Nocturne, NAL/Signet Eclipse and I’m also self-publishing.

If you didn’t write, what other profession would you have selected?
I started writing fairly young after working a slew of jobs I hated (and after changing majors many times in college) so I honestly don’t know. It would have to be something that revolved around books.

What profession do you think you would hate?
A lawyer or anything in the legal field.

Who is your favorite author?
I have to pick just one?? Depending on genre, I vary. For paranormal romance, I’d probably narrow down my fave at the moment to Sherrilyn Kenyon.

What is your favorite genre to read?
Romance!

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?
I read a book (not a romance) and at the end the female protagonist made this big life changing decision to follow her dream and do what she wanted in life and it was like that proverbial light bulb went off and I realized I wanted to be a writer. Specifically a romance writer.

What surprised you the most about the writing/publishing process?
How long everything takes. From the time I contracted my first book in the Moon Shifter series (Alpha Instinct) with NAL I think it was about two years until it was published.

What, in your opinion, are the most important elements of good writing?
Hmm, I’m not sure, lol. I guess first, strong characters. They don’t have to always be likeable or have the same belief system, but I think readers need to either be able to relate to them in some way or at least understand their motivation. And of course, any book, especially a paranormal romance or romantic suspense needs a strong plot. For romance, I also think they need to be highly emotional at their core.

How long does it usually take for you to write a book?
For novellas, about one to two weeks. For novels, it just depends. Some I can finish in two months while some take 3 or 4 months. External things like my family (namely my one year old) affect productivity. Not to mention I do a lot of writing related things like guest blog posts, interact on social media sites, and of course research that take up a lot of my reading time.

Do you ever suffer from writer’s block?  If so, what do you do to get out of it?
Thankfully, I never have. When I’m working on a project I write every day and even if my work is total crap, I can delete it the next morning. That’s not to say I don’t struggle with scenes because I absolutely do. That’s what friends are for! I bounce ideas off any number of writer friends when I’m trying to plot.

Who do you ask to read your work and give their opinion? From those opinions what helps you the most and how do you keep from picking it apart?
I have two critique partners. One is really focused on the emotional aspects of the story while the other is more technical and I draw strength from both of them. I take about 85% of their notes and implement them into my work but I think I’m at a point in my writing that I trust myself and my ability to write that I just don’t pick anything apart. I’m too involved in my story and characters to do that.

Do you have a favorite book that you have written?
It’s actually the one I’m currently working on. It will be the fourth book in my Moon Shifter series and it’s scheduled to release in Summer 2013. And the next book I start working on will likely be my favorite at the time. I always get really invested in whatever story I’m working on.

We would love for you to paint a picture for us of you writing your books.  Do you always write in your office?  Do you ever go outside on a beautiful day and write there?  Are you listening to music when you write?  Drinking wine?  Do you do your best work during the day?  At night?

I either work in my office or on my kitchen table on my laptop. Where I live now, I never go outside or anywhere else with my computer unless I can help it because I enjoy writing from home. No music. Sometimes wine! And time of day really doesn’t matter. I tend to write during my son’s naptimes and at night when he’s sleeping because that’s when the house is quiet ;)

Can you share a little of your current work with us?
Here’s an excerpt from Primal Possession:

All she could think about was Liam. Liam with his broad shoulders, dark hair, and coffee brown, deep knowing eyes. When that man looked at her, she got shivers. The good kind. Heat bloomed between her legs when he was around. He didn’t have to do anything other than train that heated gaze on her and she wanted to melt into his arms. He might be built like a linebacker, but his hands were gentle. At least the few times he’d caressed her face, they had been.

Her image of him was so clear she could almost see him now. In front of her. As she stared into space, she frowned. Then blinked. Good God, he was in front of her. Walking straight toward her.

“Crap,” she muttered. Tensing, she braced herself. She’d thought if he saw her leaving her bookstore—because she’d seen him watching—with another guy on a Friday night, he’d get the hint and leave her alone. If it was anyone else, she might think he was acting like some sort of creepy stalker, but she knew him better than that. As one of the few lupine shifters who lived in their town, Liam had tried to warn her about some crazy fanatic group that wanted to hurt humans involved with shifters. At twenty-eight she’d been taking care of herself for a long time— and besides, they weren’t involved, so there was no reason for some fanatics to come after her.

Should have known Liam wouldn’t give up so easily. The maĆ®tre d’ led him and another huge guy directly to the table next to hers. There was a decent amount of space between them, but for the way he was drilling his gaze into her, he might as well have been sitting at the same table.
“Hello, December.” Liam’s deep, intoxicating voice forced her to acknowledge him.

She flicked a quick look at his dark-haired friend, who cracked a small, almost amused smile until she glared at him—then she focused on Liam. “What are you doing here?” she asked through gritted teeth. It wasn’t for the damn food. That much she knew.

He shrugged as if it should be obvious. “Eating.”

She narrowed her eyes at him. “You know what I mean. I’m on a date, Liam.”

At the word “date” those espresso eyes of his got even darker. Under normal circumstances she might have thought it was the light playing tricks on her, but she knew better. She’d seen him enraged once before when a man had tried to mug her. His eyes had changed then. The whites had almost disappeared and she’d found herself staring into not-quite-human eyes. He’d later explained that it sometimes happened when his inner wolf wanted to take over. It had scared her then but not now. She knew he wouldn’t hurt her. Not physically. He might be dominating and sometimes too pushy, but he cared for her. In another world she might allow herself to care for him too. But they had no chance and she wasn’t going to risk getting her heart broken and losing her only family due to involvement with Liam. Especially when anything that happened between them couldn’t last. He barely looked thirty, but she knew he was over a hundred years old.

“Get rid of him.” He didn’t raise his voice, but there was a razor-sharp edge to it.

Maybe his tone should have made her nervous, but it just infuriated her. He infuriated her with all his arrogance. “Or what?”

“Or I’ll do it for you.”

She balled her hands into fists under the table. “You are so . . . so . . .”

In a fluid, graceful motion that reminded her he was more than human, he stood up and slid into the chair across from her. As if he had every right to do so. He half smiled and her traitorous libido roared to life. Why did the soft candlelight have to play off his features, making him even better looking? “Charming, handsome—”

His smart-ass response annoyed her even more, but it also allowed her to find her voice. “Arrogant and annoying,” she said in a loud whisper, barely containing the need to shout at him.

Will we be seeing a following book to this story?
Yes! The next book in this series (Mating Instinct) will be out in March 2013 and the main characters from Primal Possession will definitely be in it.

How did you come up with the character December?
She developed organically. She’s introduced in Alpha Instinct, the first book in the series, and originally I hadn’t realized she’d be the heroine in the second book but as I was writing Alpha Instinct it just developed that way.

If you could pick one actor to portray Liam on the big screen who would it be and why?
Gerard Butler. I love that man’s voice!

Was there anything you find particularly challenging when writing this book?
Since it’s the second book in a series making sure everything stayed consistent is always a concern.

What were your feelings when you first saw the cover of your finished book?
Loved it!

Thank you so much for having me here today! I’d love to offer up a print copy of Primal Possession to one commenter (US only). Be sure to leave your email address so we can contact you if you win!

Alpha Instinct (Moon Shifter, #1)
Fear has a scent. So does desire…

Ana Cordona has been a strong leader for the lupine shifters who survived after all the males and most of the females in her pack were mysteriously poisoned. As tough as she is, with no Alpha male, the pack is vulnerable to the devious shifter Taggart, who wants to claim both their ranch and Ana as his own. When Connor Armstrong comes back into her life, promising protection, it’s almost enough to make Ana forget how he walked out on her before—and reluctantly accept his offer to mate.

The minute Connor sees Ana again, it reawakens a raw hunger. He must have her for his bondmate—his wolf cries out for it. But his human side knows he must proceed with caution because of their complicated past. If he is to truly have her body and soul, he must go beyond his burning desire and win back her heart. Whatever it takes, he is determined not to leave her side again.

But Taggart and his rival pack are not their only enemies. A human element in town is targeting shifters. Their plan not only threatens Ana and Connor’s future, but the lives of the entire pack…

Lover's Instinct (Moon Shifter, #1.5)Novella:

Lupine shifter Nikan Lawless has it bad for Esperanze Cordona, the sweet and curvy woman who only views him as a friend. But when Nikan is assigned to act as Esperanze’s bodyguard during a weekend education conference, he knows it’s the perfect opportunity to seduce her off her feet—away from the pack.

To put his plan into motion Nikan cancels one of their hotel rooms, giving them time to get to know one another in a whole different way. But when a man from Esperanze’s past shows up in need of help, Nikan must shield her from a group of dangerous rogue shifters, all while trying to prove that they’re destined to be mates.

Primal Possession (Moon Shifter, #2)
To protect her, he will unleash the beast within…

As his pack’s second-in-command, lupine shifter Liam Armstrong gives orders and takes what he wants—until he meets red-headed, blue-eyed December McIntyre. Liam knows the human beauty is his intended mate the moment he sees her, but December is far too strong-willed to accept his protection.

December, whose brother is the town sheriff, has every reason to mistrust shifters after one killed her youngest sibling. But the forceful and handsome Liam has gotten under her skin in a way she hadn’t thought possible, and the desire she feels for him is almost too much to bear.

When a radical hate group targets all humans known to sympathize with paranormal beings, December is attacked in her bookstore. Reluctantly, she turns to the only one who can help her: Liam. And he is going to take her to places within herself she never knew existed.

Meet the Cast of In My Dreams & GIVEAWAY by Cameo Renae

Meet the Cast
of
In My Dreams

This is Elizabeth Hayes…aka Lizzy. When she was younger, she had dreams of people dying, and later found out that those dreams, or premonitions, would come true. Now she’s seventeen, and things were just starting to look up…UNTIL…she has a dream about her boyfriend Michael. Soon after, she gets a call…a call that would change her forever and send her life spiraling into chaos.

Meet Michael - handsome, athletic, and the love of Lizzy’s life. Being the “nice guy”, and trying to help out a friend, causes him to be put in a situation which ends his life much too early. He’s been murdered and now his murderer is after Lizzy. But Michael will not cross-over until he knows Lizzy is safe, and he will do anything he can to help her from the other side.

Meet Emily...She’s Lizzy’s best friend. She’s very hyper and loves anything to do with the paranormal. She gave Lizzy pointers on how to make contact with Michael, and she sometimes doesn’t listen to sound advice…which will get her into a lot of trouble.

Meet Tyler… He’s the real reason why they’re all in this huge mess. He was Michael’s best friend growing up, but turned to drugs as he entered high-school. Bad things turned worse…and after calling Michael for help…well…you probably already know what happens next.

Meet Lucy Crow – Native Alaskan Shaman. She can talk to the dead. Michael contacted her, in spirit, and demanded that she get in touch with Lizzy. She traveled for many miles from her village, to give Lizzy a message and warning from Michael.

Meet Buck. He’s a drug-dealing bastard and murderer who fled to Alaska after being wanted in other states. Somehow Tyler got mixed up with this psycho, and paid dearly for it. Buck threatened Tyler’s life, and told him he would kill him if he didn’t pay his drug dues. That’s when Tyler called Michael for help, and the rest…is written in the book.

And last, but NOT least…meet Jonathan. No, he’s not a werewolf, but he has become a big presence in Lizzy’s life. You’ll be surprised who he actually is in the end.

It was happening again. The dreams. The nightmares. It was something seventeen year-old Elizabeth "Lizzy" Hayes thought she'd outgrown; dreams that would come true; detailed premonitions of how people would die. This time she dreams about her boyfriend, Michael Young, and soon discovers that he's been found... dead.

Michael hasn't crossed over because he was murdered, and now his murderer is coming for Lizzy. His spirit won't rest until she is safe, and as a newbie spirit, the easiest way for him to make contact is through Lizzy's dreams. When she dreams, it's as if he hasn't died.

Lizzy must learn to pull on her inner strength to survive horrifying events. Meanwhile, in the spirit world, Michael learns everything he can about his supernatural gifts to help. But will it be enough to save her?

AUTHOR INTERVIEW - Michael Loring

Welcome Michael, can you tell us a little about yourself how long you've been writing?
Well, I’m not exactly certain what to say other than some basics. I’m a avid video game player, I enjoy reading (obviously :P) and writing has been my passion since I was eight years old. When I was in second grade my teacher had assigned a short story writing project for the entire class, and I found I had a talent for it. When we had to turn in our projects, mine being about a young boy staying home alone for the first time and being afraid of all the little sounds his house made, I received the highest grade in class. I realized I wanted to be an author the moment my teacher turned to me and said, “You should consider being an author!”

If you didn’t write, what other profession would you have selected?
I had thought long and hard on what I’d want to do if writing didn’t work out. I think what I would have done is been a boxing instructor. Other than writing, boxing had been a passion of mine. I loved the adrenaline rush of placing on those gloves and sparring with a partner. It was the most fun I’d have away from the computer!

What profession do you think you would hate?
Astronaut. I knew from a young age I didn’t want to go into space. I have some serious claustrophobia and anxiety, so being stuck in a tight little space for months on end would drive me crazy!

How do you balance between your personal life and your writing?
I once heard somewhere that you need to treat writing like a job. You have to set a time frame where you leave everything behind to write. For me I go to the library, where I have no television or internet to distract me. Everyone knows that when I’m at the library that there’s no getting a hold of me.

What is your favorite genre to read?
Supernatural. I have loved the abnormal ever since I was a little boy, and reading it gave me a thrill nothing else could. I also love action/adventure. Put those two together and you’ve got me hooked!

What books are currently on your nightstand?
The Thirteenth Chime by Emma Michaels. It’s a great book, and I’ve been having a hard time putting it down to continue with my own writing haha!

Okay, you have just finished your book or it has just been released.  Is there something special you do to celebrate?
It’s not exactly spectacular what I do to celebrate, but I enjoy it nonetheless. I own a rather impressive movie collection (impressive to me, at least :P) and I pick out a series of movies to watch and then order a large pizza. Then me, my mom, and my sister sit together and watch the movies, sometimes making jokes about the movie, (“You think to Bella kissing Edward is like sucking on a Popsicle?)

How long did it take for your first book to get published?
It took me a year and a half to write Dehumanized. Once it was done, it took me a month to fully edit it. Then I set out to get published, and it took me exactly four months. I got rejected quite a few times, and I even got accepted by some places, but I didn’t agree with the terms of their contracts. When I found Bokheim Publishing it was like a God sent. I just felt a spark when I was looking at their website. I knew this was going to be it, and look at that! It was.

Do you ever suffer from writer’s block?  If so, what do you do to get out of it?
I get writer’s block more often than I’d like. Every author does. What I do is simply take a break, let my mind fill back up with the creative juices by watching movies and reading other books. Everything I do is to help keep inspiration.

We would love for you to paint a picture for us of you writing your books.  Do you always write in your office?  Do you ever go outside on a beautiful day and write there?  Are you listening to music when you write?  Drinking wine?  Do you do your best work during the day?  At night?
As I mentioned before, I write exclusively at the library. I love going there-it’s my home away from home. I bring with me a backpack with my laptop and some cash inside and then I enter one of the study rooms with the HD TV and desk. I sometimes bring a movie with me to play in the background, but mostly I set up my IPod and listen to music. I always have a drink, usually sprite or ginger ale. The music I listen to is set according to what kind of scene I’m writing. It helps me get in the mood to write what’s going on. Like if I’m writing an action scene I listen to metal or rock, or if I’m writing a sad scene I listen to somber songs. It really works out for me. I write just like this for up to nine hours before I decide to head home and rest to redo the same thing the next day.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?
I’m currently working on the sequel to Dehumanized. That’s my main focus, but I have a few projects going on that I tend to whenever I feel I need a break from Dehumanized. One thing I’ve really been focusing on is a new collection of short stories that I hope to have done within the next few months.

In Twitter fashion use 140 characters or less, sum up Dehumanized for us.
Dehumanized is new look on werewolves that pays homage to the old school wolves like An American Werewolf In London or The Wolf Man with traces of dystopia inside.

How did you come up with the character Ryan Zachery?
I came up with Ryan long before I came up with the story. He is a young man who was ripped from his life and forced into this new one he hates so dearly. Ryan has a lot of qualities that I do. I’d daresay he’s like my brother, if I had one. My main influence though came from Lawrence Talbot in the 2010 version of The Wolfman movie. His revulsion at what he is and his rejection of the wolf inside of him comes a lot from Lawrence Talbot, though near the end I steer away from that character and create a very original character that takes a life of his own.

If you could pick one actor to portray Ryan on the big screen who would it be and why?
That’s a tough question. If I had to choose, I think maybe Taylor Lautner. In my mind when I picture Ryan I see something similar to Taylor Lautner, with dark hair and a wide frame, but with a young appearance. I think Lautner would be a good match if he could portray the drama that goes on in Ryan’s life.

What were your feelings when you first saw the cover of your finished book?
Revulsion. Complete and utter revulsion. Haha, no I’m kidding. I could barely contain my joy when I first saw the cover. Emma Michaels, the cover artist who did my cover, was very patient with me when I was talking ideas with her. When she sent me the first draft, I was at the library, and when I saw it I couldn’t contain my embarrassment after jumping up and shouting, “Oh my God!” It was just so epically awesome, and it filled me with such joy to see my work coming to life. I nearly cried that day.

GUEST POST - What Writing Means to Author Michael Loring

MICHAEL LORING

There are people that are under the impression that a lot of authors write in order to pursue a career. Some believe it’s all about the money and fame, that all the author wishes to accomplish is to become famous and make a ton of money for having written the next Twilight series. And maybe for some that’s true, but for me and certainly many other authors it isn’t about that at all.

It’s about the escape. The reprieve from reality that draws us to the world of writing. When you write, you become a God-figuratively of course. You control the lives of these characters you create, and you decide what goes and what doesn’t. You decide if a vampire is affected by sunlight, or if a werewolf transforms only during the full moon, or if a human can fly or not. You decide who dies and who doesn’t, who CAN die and who CAN’T. It’s kind of a rush!

Writing isn’t just some hobby, it’s a passion! A passion you dedicate yourself to for as long as needed to complete this world of your creation. It’s an escape from the reality you find boring and uneventful to a place where things are always harrowing and interesting. It doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t handle reality, it just means you are bored with it and like to place yourself in another. Writing can save you from a bad situation, from a dull moment, from yourself. No matter what mood you’re in you can channel it into writing. Who needs therapy? Writing is there for you in even the worst situation. It’s your friend, your savior. It will always be there for you, because it doesn’t judge or persecute you. Plus it’s free to do.

There are people who seek out writing as a way to make money. There was an episode of Two and a Half Men where one of the main characters, Allen, attempts to write a screenplay to help him get out of his financial problem, but he couldn’t come up with any good ideas and kept returning to the idea of a meteor hurtling towards Earth. The reason he couldn’t do it was because he didn’t truly hold the passion for writing like we authors do. Only those who are truly dedicated can write. You don’t write just for the benefits, you write to escape and to create. It’s a give-give act, not a give-take.

Asking an author what it’s like to write is a tough question. You’ll never fully understand until you do it yourself. No one can explain exactly what it’s like, because it’s just one of those things. It’s an art, a passion, a lifestyle only a select type of person can do.

Don’t try to write unless you can feel it. Like I said, writing is only for those who are doing it for fun rather than for profit. The money you can make from writing is just an added bonus. If you don’t feel the passion burning inside of you, then don’t even attempt it. Everyone has a passion in life, and something they take great joy from. Writing is my passion, what’s yours?

Come back tomorrow to read more about Michael.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW & GIVEAWAY - Sara Humphreys

Paranormal Addicts welcomes Sara Humphreys!!

Sara is stopping by to share a bit about herself and give away a paperback copy of her new release for the Amoceo Legend series - Untouched!
>

Welcome, can you tell us a little about yourself how long you've been writing?

I’ve always created stories in some way, shape or form. I had drifted away from writing due to work/life/kids but found my way back to it a few years ago and never looked back.

If you didn’t write, what other profession would you have selected?

I was an actor and adored that but getting work isn’t easy and it’s not exactly conducive to family life. For the past decade or so, I’ve worked as a professional public speaker and trainer. I train executives all over the country on public speaking & presentation skills through my company Taney Speaker Training.

What profession do you think you would hate?

Anything that involved doing the same thing over and over. Sitting a desk organizing someone else’s crap would probably be at the top of that list. Shoot me now.

Who is your favorite author?

It’s a toss-up between Christine Feehan & Lori Handeland

Other than writing, what are some of your passions in life?

My family. I’m married to my college sweetheart and we have four teenage/pre-teen sons.

Okay, you have just finished your book or it has just been released.  Is there something special you do to celebrate?

I’ll watch a movie and just hang out with the family. No computer. Just the family.

How long does it usually take for you to write a book?

That depends. When I was working full-time at College of Westchester, I would need at least 8 months. However, now that I’m working from home full-time, it’s going to be more like 3 months…but we shall see.

Do you ever suffer from writer’s block?  If so, what do you do to get out of it?

I step away from the computer and get some distance from it. Music is also an excellent way to spark a lazy muse.

We would love for you to paint a picture for us of you writing your books.  Do you always write in your office?  Do you ever go outside on a beautiful day and write there?  Are you listening to music when you write?  Drinking wine?  Do you do your best work during the day?  At night?

All of the above. In all honesty it depends on what’s going on with my kids, what gigs are happening with Taney Speaker Training and how much sleep I’ve gotten. I’ve done all the things that you mentioned but my favorite is to sit on my deck on a beautiful day. That’s heaven.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

Sure. I just finished an Amoveo free e-book short story. It will be available for download in October. This should be a great way for a new reader to fall in love with the Amoveo. I’m also working on TALL, DARK, AND, VAMPIRE. It’s the first book in my vampire series, DEAD IN THE CITY.

Will we be seeing a following book to this story?

You sure will. In fact, there are three more books coming in the AMOVEO LEGEND series. UNTAMED will be out in November 2012. UNDONE and UNCLAIMED will be released in 2013.

What were your feelings when you first saw the cover of your finished book?

I thought that it was gorgeous and that the designers at Sourcebooks had captured the spirit of the book beautifully. Their covers always rock!

Sara is a graduate of Marist College, with a B.A. Degree in English Literature & Theater. Her initial career path after college was as a professional actress. Some of her television credits include, A&E Biography, Guiding Light, Another World, As the World Turns and Rescue Me.
Sara is the President of Taney Speaker Training, which specializes in public speaking, presentation development and communication skills training. She has trained executives at Verizon, Bristol-Meyer Squibb, Westchester County and the United States Navy.  Her speaking career beganwith Monster’s Making It Count programs, speaking in high schools and colleges around the United States to thousands of students.
Sara has been a lover of both the paranormal and romance novels for years. Her sci-fi/fantasy/romance obsession began years ago with the TV Series STAR TREK and an enormous crush on Captain Kirk. That sci-fi obsession soon evolved into the love of all types of fantasy/paranormal; vampires, ghosts, werewolves, and of course shape shifters. Sara is married to her college sweetheart, Will. They live in Bronxville, New York with their 4 boys and 2 insanely loud dogs. Life is busy but never dull.

I do have to say, this is a great trailer for Untouched!  Enjoy!

The Amoveo are an ancient race who've lived secretly among humans for thousands of years. They are beautiful and incredibly strong but their race is extremely fragile--each has until the age of 30 to find their soul mate, before their bodies start to die a slow, painful death.

Layla Nickelsen has spent her life running from a mate she didn't choose, until William Fleury finally confronts her. Normally stoic and unemotional, William finds himself befuddled by Layla: his growing feelings for her and his driving need to protect her. And Layla has to admit that William might be everything she's always wanted after all...
