THE BLOOD SUCKERS

THE BLOOD SUCKERS – Vampires, Harpies, Succubus
Vampires have been around for a very long time in literature. From the very first fireside stories of the living dead tens of thousands of years ago to the TV shows that have aired since the sixties, vampires have been both good and evil, sexy and horrific, smart and dumb. They have been killed in so many ways it’s surprising they keep cropping up. From Buffy to Beowulf, vampire hunters have been an integral part of the legends. But there are other blood suckers out there as well.

PRIZE: eCopy of Vampire Book of Your Choice
TIME'S UP AT: 11AM

So, here are your questions:

1. What would you be like as a vampire? Why?

2. If you wrote a book about blood suckers, would your hero he one of them or the guy who fights them?

3. What other creatures out there are blood or soul suckers?

  1. So welcome to that zany group of creatures known for their sucking abilities... Make sure to stay in the sunlight... You know what the dark brings...

  2. I was a great "Spike" fan. Besides being hot, he really couldn't decide whether he wanted to be good or bad. Then there was Nick on Moonlight. Sigh. I don't know why that went off.

I love Vamps with angst. The Carpathians are great.

Of course, the Gulatega in The Shoppe of Spells were believed by the Native Americans that guard Ruthorford to take one's soul....

I like both. I'd write both.

  3. Minnette--I'm having a ball. Great way to decorate the house--take a break to discuss paranormal. I am such a happy girl!

  4. Ah finally a topic I can really sink my teeth into... As to favorite vampire from the Poll-- Michael Tyler from Syrie James' Nocturne, Just about any of the guys and gals in Maggie Shayne's wing's of the night series, Connor Buchanan from Kerrelyn's series, and of course, my darling Vampires who haunt my dreams until I write their stories are always on the top of the list. oh yeah, and Spike no Angel no Spike, oh to heck with it, Xander!

    1. What would you be like as a vampire? Why?

I think I would enjoy taking the time to do all the things that I don't know, with one exception, getting a tan. Don't do that now and wouldn't then. I'm a firm believer that you should harm no-one so this makes being a vampire a bit of a dilemma, After all you have to..survive so to speak. So I think I would have to find a way to do it without hurting anyone, thus why I like Kerrelyn's series, though I'm more of a bliskey girl than a chocolood girl.

    2. If you wrote a book about blood suckers, would your hero he one of them or the guy who fights them?

~Blinks~ Well.... both? why can't they be both?

    3. What other creatures out there are blood or soul suckers?

Succubi, Incubus, There is also the theory of Psychic Vampires who actually suck the life out of a person instead of blood, and also, wait pg-13... I can't go there. I am pretty sure there are some demons, and necromancers, and possibly a witch or warlock or two who could manage it.

  5. Me too... I'm sitting finishing my articles for the hop, listening to Christmas music, and knitting between times... all in my bed, of course! With DH throwing food at me from time to time... Awwwww.......

  6. Oh, I HAD to vote Spike! He's the BEST vamp EVER!!

    1. What would you be like as a vampire? Why?

Heck yes! I'd love to be a vampire! Eternal youth, your body transforms to it's best possible look... Sounds amazing!

    2. If you wrote a book about blood suckers, would your hero he one of them or the guy who fights them?

If I wrote a vampire book, my "hero" would be a vampire anti-hero, and probably a mix of Spike, Edward Rochester, and a few others...

    3. What other creatures out there are blood or soul suckers?

Do you mean sentient or non-sentient? If non, Chupacabras for one. Sentient? Certain sorts of incubi and succubi take both blood and life... And there's also Dementors and certain other types of spirits created by gods to do similar things...

  7. LOL, Christiana... sink her teeth... I'm all for Angel myself; Spike was cute, but he whined a lot. Of course, most of his characters whine, don't they? I'm afraid I'm not into the vamp books as much as some of you here, but I loved the original Dracula book (talking OLD school) and LOVE movies with vampires. And ~clears throat~ I HAVE NOT seen, nor read any of the Twilight series. Yes, I'm the one who hasn't. Just haven't had time, I guess. I think Buffy and Angel are about all I've seen lately with vamps on it (reruns at Netflix). I'm open to suggestions however! :o)

  8. Shanon, it's Mick. (And I preferred Josef on Moonlight). ;)

And I also love Henry Fitzroy from Blood Ties. He's so yummy!

  9. If I was a vampire, I would be one of the ones who was turned against my will, so I would likely be all angsty & conficted, hating what I am, but too chicken to and my life. The idea of drinking blood is just so...yuck.

If I was to write about blood suckers, my hero would be a good vamp, working with other paranormals to keep the bad ones from taking over the world & killing all the poor defenseless mortals. Like in Shiloh Walker's Hunters series.

Not sure what others suckers there are. Would a sineater count?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Too funny, Kathryn... Kind of hard to be a vamp if you don't like drinking blood. Seems like that would be a prerequisite~! I like the idea of a good vampire working with other paranormals.

  11. Minnette! Angel was the worst of the worst! IMHO, he could be slapped with the title pedophile because he's almost 250 and has sex with a girl on her 17th birthday in CA, where she's still considered underage... Plus there's all that psychological torture of others, plus the murder of Jenny, and not the least of which his idea of "help" which is more like giving the barest details and then turning tail and running rather than helping Buffy and the Scoobies...

As for Twilight, I'm with you. Never seen/read any of that bunk.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Isis, you are so right. I Hit N instead of M. We all know why I use an editor. lol I forgot about Josef. I adored him.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Probably wouldn't want to be a vampire... so probably be like Louis in Anne Rice's series...

My hero would probably be like Spike or Eric..

I like Richelle Mead's Succubus series... Stayed up pretty late reading it a few time...

    ReplyDelete
  14. Other vamps to check out? Uh... Blood Ties, as stated above, Moonlight, and even sometimes True Blood (but IMHO only Season 1 is worth watching)... Can't think of much else at the moment.

I'm happier dealing with my personal vamp, Adrik. He's my own creation, and I'm slowly getting to know him and his Mate, the lovely Cerelia.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Shanon, did you nab the first episode of Moonlight when it was free on iTunes? I did and was watching it last night on my iPad after my family picked up my dad from the airport... Josef is so snarky and I just adore him!

    ReplyDelete
  16. LoL Minnette. Angel was okay but even he whined. Who in their right mind leaves the woman they love rather than find a way to work around things, I mean seriously do you think he'd have let her jump off that platform and die, or be standing at the bottom to catch her and revive her. Spike whined, but not every character of his does.. (loved him in PS I love you, sad movie but I can handle sad movies.) In the end, Xander always won me over, because he was always the one there, day in day out, fighting with her and beside her, but he was always there with her. Pity he wasn't a vampire, that would have made him perfect for Buffy.

As for Twilight... I read YA because I have nieces and nephews who are getting to that age, and their parents aren't big readers. It is an okay series, good for the kids.

a writer friend said just last month, "Time travel is a very personal topic for some writers and you shouldn't question the rules of their time travel stories."

To which I pointed out, "That is Very true, and it relates to Paranormal, Sci-Fi, Fantasy and every other Genre too- after all we don't all see sparkly vampires and sweet fairies. Of course there is nothing wrong with those things but sometimes just sometimes the vampire is the bad guy, the wolf wants you for dinner, and the fairy is known as the screw-up fairy for a reason."

  17. I prefer to make the hero or heroine the vampire. And one of my all time favorites is Bones, from Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress series.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I just had a convo on BuffyTube.com about Xander. I can't like him because of his abusive ways... He's so emotionally abusive to Anya, and such a bully to Spike, Buffy, and everyone else... But dang I have so much respect for Nicholas Brendan. He's such a great actor.

As for Spike, yeah he whines, but he's less broody and obnoxious than Angel. Angel had a century to learn the ins and outs of the soul he was cursed with, but he didn't. He could have sought someone out to get his soul anchored, but he didn't.

Yeah, I'm way too into Buffy right now. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  19. I was thinking more Angel in his series, but you are absolutely right; Angel was an a-hole for a lot of the series. And Spike ended up be the ultimate hero, didn't he? ~raises hands in supplication~ LOL

    I loved Louie in Interview...

Someone else recommended Rachel Mead and I've got her on my list. Has anyone read Angie Fox's Demon series? I've got a couple of those on my TBR pile too.

  20. Hi, Dani! Thanks for joining the madness!

    ReplyDelete
  21. OMG! How could I forget Bones and his crew?? Jeaniene is just awesome and writes such great books! Thanks for the reminder, Dani!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Hey Minnette xD;; oh you picked a good one here..

    1. What would you be like as a vampire? Why?

No, I can't stand the sight of blood, I would freak out and pass out.. Let me be a pretty Harpy instead ;)

    2. If you wrote a book about blood suckers, would your hero he one of them or the guy who fights them?

*cough* I don't know, My blood sucker would be a mix, neither good nor bad per-say. He looks out for himself and family. So he would most likely rip your throat out first.

    3. What other creatures out there are blood or soul suckers?

Succubus, Inccubus.. There's another soul sucker, it makes them younger to feed on souls but I can't remember. Oh and Wraith >.>;; dangerous things. xD; Those are fun.. But I'd rather see Pretty Harpies, people just don't seem to right about them much.

    ReplyDelete
  23. LMAO, Christiana... sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, isn't it? I love the 2nd Hellboy movie if only for the vicious tooth fairies! Too funny!

Just a tab, Isis, but that's okay... it's a great series to be into! DH and I watched it years later and absolutely fell in love. Another one, if you haven't seen it, the British series called Torchwood... wonderful series, cute lead, but not long enough... kind of like Firefly.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Oh, I LOVE Torchwood! And they just finished Torchwood: Miracle Day, which former Buffy writer Jane Espenson also worked on... ;) I was at that comic-con panel, and Starz posted the WHOLE panel to youtube so you can watch too! The lead actor and the girl who plays Gwen are still on that show.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yami... You reminded me of another one; the story of Dorien Gray. I think he sucked the life energy out of young people and made his portrait grow old instead of him. Also, there are the Skeksis from Dark Crystal that sucked the life force out of the Gelflings. I love that movie. There are a few more like that out there too.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hmmm, Eric from Sookie Stackhouse is dreamy, but I really like Stark from House of Night and Taren from the Conversion series.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Oh, I didn't know that, Isis... I'll have to go over and check it out. I wish they would bring the series back... I hated how they ended it and what they made Jack do in the end. It really P**d me off!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Sharon, welcome. I almost missed you! :o)

    ReplyDelete
  29. And James Marsters was in 3 episodes of Torchwood in Season 2... As Captain John Hart (of the Napoleonic coat)... Oh how I adore him!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Oooh the questions:

Last minute vamp man- Peter from My Blood Approves.

    1. What would you be like as a vampire? Why?

I'd like to think I'd be a seductress, but who am I kidding, I'm way too awkward for that.

    2. If you wrote a book about blood suckers, would your hero he one of them or the guy who fights them?

    Definitely one of them.

    3. What other creatures out there are blood or soul suckers?

Fey, Grim Reapers/Death, and Angels. Heather Killough-Walden has a very interesting series she's just started about angels with one of them beinga blood sucker. But the whole soul sucker aspect of angels for me is the idea that they escort souls to the next place .

    ReplyDelete
  31. Okay...Slowing down....get up and stir the pot...

    ReplyDelete
  32. You wouldn't be in the other world, Molly! You'd be sexy and graceful I'll bet! Heather's book sound really interesting. I'll have check her out. I LOVE angels myself (obviously, since I write about them) and the mythology of Catholicism has always fascinated me. I think that's why Constantine is one of my favorite movies.

    ReplyDelete
  33. 1. What would you be like as a vampire? Why?

I think I'd probably be a really sweet vampire contrary to the mean ones out there ;) I'd probably be made fun of for being too nice ;)

    2. If you wrote a book about blood suckers, would your hero he one of them or the guy who fights them?

He'd totally be a Vampire and not some Vampire hunter *sniffs*

    3. What other creatures out there are blood or soul suckers?

Hmm there are quite a few but none that haven't already been mentioned lol

And for my OTHER answer on the poll I pick Damon from the Vampire Diaries or Eric from True Blood.. yum yum!

    *waves to everyone*

    ReplyDelete
  34. I loved him in Torchwood, too, Isis. He was such a stinker! :o)

    ReplyDelete
  35. A vampire that's made fun of because they are too sweet... interesting concept! Well, I guess Louie was teased a lot for being such a wuss about killing by Lestat. In The Belle Stalker, Tequelin can't eat human food and what he does eat is disgusting (BTW, he is NOT a vampire), but to him it's delicious. I think that's how vamps are too... they crave blood... sort of like zombies crave brains. :o)

    ReplyDelete
  36. Ewww. Been watching the Walking Dead with my son cause it's filmed around here. They are NOT adorable....

    ReplyDelete
  37. Love me some sparkly vampires because I have a major crush on Pattinson. There, I admitted it.

I'd be one of those reluctant vampires, apologizing for the first hundred years to all those I killed. LOL!

Loved Kris Rusch's SINS OF THE BLOOD (back in print as an e-book), but won't give away the surprise. ''

    ReplyDelete
  38. ... speaking of zombies...How is it, Shanon?

Okay, I gotta know what "sparkly" vampires are. Sorry for my ignorance... I came up with Liberace as a vampire when this was mentioned, but I somehow think that must be off... anyone?

    ReplyDelete
  39. Actually, it's pretty good, as long as I watch through my sweater....

Okay, so you and I come up with Liberace...

    Don't they sparkle in Twilight?

    ReplyDelete
  40. LOL Minnette, sparkly vampires are the vampires from Stephanie Meyers Twilight series :) the vampires in that one "sparkle" like a diamond in the sun :)

    ReplyDelete
  41. Ah, I see... so I wasn't that far off with Liberace... He would definitely sparkle in the sun. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  42. Okay, ladies... it's 3pm... And the winner of the vampire/blood sucker ebook of her choice is... MAY!!!!!! Congrads, girl! Send me a note at mmeador@minnettemeador.com and let me know what book you would like and what format... now onto the next section... THE FANTASTIC...

    ReplyDelete
  43. Oh, Barnabas Collins. I used to buy the books in Woolworths for sixpence each but never saw the series. I'd love to catch up sometime.
